What Is Under-Insured Motorist (UIM) Coverage? … And How Does It Work?

Under-Insured Motorist (UIM) coverage is additional coverage that you purchase from your own auto insurance carrier that is designed to step in when the driver who was at fault for the accident does not have enough insurance coverage to fairly and adequately compensate the accident victim(s) for their injuries and other damages.

For example, in a scenario where an accident victim had $50,000 worth of injuries and damages but the at-fault driver had only a $30,000 auto insurance policy, the accident victim’s UIM policy should step in and provide the additional $20,000 worth of compensation for the victim’s injuries and damages.

Even when making a UIM claim against your own auto insurance policy you will likely still need the assistance of an aggressive experienced auto accident attorney because a conflict of interest immediately develops between you and your own insurance company.

You both need and want to be fairly compensated for your injuries, while your insurance company wants to settle your claim for as little as possible so that they can keep as much money as possible.
